Sofia Vargas was born Feb 24, 1930 in South America Colombia and resided in Mesitas del Colegio and Bogota during her young adult life. Sofia was raised on a farm with her mother and five siblings and the farm produced flowers, coffee and many farm animals which the family used as a source of income. Sofia worked on the farm and assisted in a small shop where the family served food and drinks to customers. Sofia also during this time helped raise her niece when her elder sister passed while giving birth. A demonstration of Sofia’s dedication to family.
Sofia Vargas Reyes was married to Hernando Reyes in 1957 and it was love at first sight. Hernando was in the military at the time he met Sofia. Sofia Reyes had big dreams and in 1962 & journeyed to the United States. New Rochelle, NY is where she lived for the remainder of her life. Mother of three children, daughter Inez, and sons Louis and Joseph Reyes. She raised her grandson Nelson Reyes with the love as truly her own son and for Nelson as his own mother. Great joy was given to Sofia by all her extended family and grandchildren; Nelson, Noheli, Francheska, Aaron and Danielle Reyes throughout her lifetime.
Mother worked tirelessly to buy two homes in New Rochelle with the help of her husband and daughter. Mom also survived the loss of her son Luis Reyes gracefully and showed great power and strength during these times. Until mothers passing on Jan 20, 2022, Hernando and Sofia spent 65 years together, a love that will last beyond eternity. Mother taught us all to put into practice, patience, unconditional love, bravery, understanding, honesty and most important forgiveness.
There is a saying that says, “life gives and takes from us during our lifetime,” in this instance, life gave 92 years of unconditional love and we are grateful. Abuela Sofia, Grandma, Mami, We know you are on to your next Journey, and I am sure you are bringing all the love of your family and friends with you. We know you remain in our hearts.
