Virginia Gataletto

On Tuesday, February 11, 2021, Virginia Gataletto – loving wife and mother of two – passed away at the age of 96.
Virginia was born July 19th, 1924 in New Rochelle, NY to Ann and Vincenzo Iannolillo.
Virginia attended schools in New Rochelle and especially enjoyed languages. She excelled in her classes and missed a perfect score on her Italian language regents by one point.
After High School Virginia worked at Schrafft’s restaurant in New Rochelle. She made sandwiches and also worked in the candy section. At the time, she didn’t realize how her job there would affect her life.
Later she started working in the mailroom at Johns Manville, a major manufacturing company in Manhattan. They sent her to secretarial school, and she worked her way up to Executive Secretary for the top executives in the company.
In 1956 her sister-in-law Maria asked Virginia to join her on a trip to Europe. They visited Maria’s mother in Austria. The trip included Switzerland, France and Italy.
One day in Venice, among the thousands of people in St. Mark’s Square, Virginia noticed a man that she recognized from High School and from her job at Schrafft’s. She called out, “New Rochelle!”
He heard her. His name was Dominick and he did live in New Rochelle, and attended New Rochelle High School at the same time Virginia did – and also worked at Schrafft’s the same time she did. They visited some of the sites in Italy together and decided to meet when they returned to New Rochelle.
A year later they were married. A year after that Dominick Junior was born, and 16 months after that Vincent was born.
Virginia was a devoted mother and wife, and throughout her life she continued to work. Her doctor asked her to work in his office when he recognized that her Italian language skills would be helpful with his Italian speaking patients.
She and her husband loved seeing shows on Broadway – an activity she continued by taking bus trips into New York for many years.
She is pre-deceased by her husband of 48 years, Dominick, and her brother Lou. She is survived by her sons Vincent and Dominick and his wife Lisa as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.
Intelligent, strong, always upbeat, devoted and loving, she always impressed people she knew and met with her decency, caring and kindness.
Visitation is Wednesday, February 17th from 4 to 8 pm at Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel, 16 Shea Place in New Rochelle, NY. The funeral mass will take place at Blessed Sacrament Church in New Rochelle at 10:30 am on Thursday, February 18th.
