Raul Vilca

Raul Vilca

Raul Vilca, a longtime resident of New Rochelle, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2020 at the age of 82. The 3rd of 6 children, he was born on May 2, 1938 in Lima, Peru to the late Teresa Sovero Vilca and Juan Vilca. He came from a modest home, and from an early age, Raul learned to make the most of what he had.
He was resilient and determined right from the start. Despite suffering a severe infection in his right leg at age 11, which left him with a fused knee, he never let it
hold him back. Without complaint, he remained strong and independent, continuing to pursue his interests and studies.
Upon graduating from Our Lady of Guadalupe College in Lima, Peru, he moved to Mamaroneck, NY with his brother Jorge in 1971, then later to New Rochelle in 1973.
Raul worked for Gannett Suburban Newspapers for 18 years. Starting as a newspaper delivery driver, he eventually worked his way up to District Sales Manager until retiring in 2004.
Raul was a fervent soccer aficionado; he loved good, engaging conversations, Peruvian food, and classical Peruvian music—especially the Peruvian waltz (vals criollo) and Marinera. His deep connection to music led to a lifelong hobby of tinkering with audio equipment. He had an interest in art and a talent for drawing and lettering, which few knew about because he rarely shared his work. Raul’s warm, exuberant laugh was the memorable kind that made you smile when you heard it. He took pride in dressing well and always polished his shoes before
walking out the door. He was there to offer a helping hand to anyone who needed it, and thanks to an insatiable love of learning, was never short of interesting information to share.
Raul was so many things wrapped into one. Tough, yet loving. Strong, yet compassionate. And a reminder to all that you choose what defines you. Pursue your passions with reckless abandon, laugh so it makes others smile, and always make the most of what you have.
Raul is survived by his sisters Lidia and Teresa, his brothers Jorge and Juan, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother Hugo.
Visiting hours will be Wednesday, December 16 from 4-7 pm at Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel Inc. at 16 Shea Place, New Rochelle, NY. A funeral mass will be
held at Blessed Sacrament Church on Thursday, December 17 at 10:30 am, followed by interment at Beechwoods Cemetery.
