Vernal Gordon

Vernal Gordon

Vernal “VG” Vonderlyn Gordon died on November 4, 2020 in New Rochelle, NY. VG was born in Kingston, Jamaica to the late Hylton Sr. and Lena Gordon. He was known as a gentle, joyful, and blessed soul.
In Jamaica, VG attended Xavier College and graduated from Grantham College in 1968. After college, he joined Facey Commodity as an inventory clerk before moving to the merchandise department. VG was later promoted to the accounts receivable department as an accounts receivable manager in 1974. He later moved to Henkel Chemical (now a part of LASCO) where he worked until he migrated.
Before leaving Jamaica, VG met Angella Gordon (Copeland) during a trip to England, and the two married in Jamaica in 1976. He migrated to Miami, FL in 1980 where he and his wife lovingly raised their daughters, Sonia and Shelley, and their son Stephen. After his wife passed, he raised their final child, Sheldon, and his other children with the help of his late mother and father and his brother and his wife, Anthony and Yvonne Gordon.
VG later married Sharon Keene. During their relationship, he helped raise his stepdaughters, Keisha Suckie-Williams and Camille Suckie-Prout. Sharon and VG also became parents to his final child Kayla Gordon.
In 2005, VG moved to Tallahassee, FL to live with his daughter and sons. During his time in Tallahassee, he switched occupations and became a security guard, an occupation he proudly held for 15 years. In Tallahassee, VG became well-known as the lovable, caring, flirtatious mall, capitol, and hospital security guard. He even had an opportunity to play a role as a security guard in the 2008 film Recount.
While living in Tallahassee, he became engaged to his longtime friend from middle school Mercelyn McLeod. The couple happily married in 2010 in New Rochelle, NY where VG resided for the remainder of his days with his wife who was also his best friend. During his time in New Rochelle, he continued his occupation as a security guard where he was previously employed by Mastercard and most recently at Century Protective Security, stationed at GHP in Elmsford, NY.
VG was passionate about sports. His passion led to his involvement in the South Florida Cricket Association where he served as secretary and scorekeeper for many years. He and his voice were well-known for his sports commentary on the Caribbean radio station WAVS.
His life will be cherished by his beloved wife, Mercelyn; five children, Sonia, Shelley-Ann (Clyde), Stephen, Sheldon (LaTavia), and Kayla; step-children, Keith McLeod (Nabeela) and Dale McLeod (Deanah); grandchildren, Scott Gordon, Angella, Aziza, and Ayanna Owens, Angella-Lily and Annsley-Clyde Baker; soon-to-be granddaughter Gordon; step-grandchildren Maya, Mina and Daniel Mcleod; great-grandchildren Zion and Zora Sharpe; siblings Trevor Myrie (Vivia), Ludlow Gordon (Leonie), Loletta Williams, Anthony Gordon (Yvonne), Jennifer Scudder (Gladstone), Hylton Gordon Jr. (Joan), and Merlene Isaac (Ronald); and a host of nieces and nephews and extended family.
