Patricia J. Burger

Patricia J. Burger

Patricia J. Burger, 96, a longtime resident of New Rochelle, passed away peacefully and quietly on Friday, November 13. She died at home, surrounded by her children, in a house where she had lived for the past 62 years.
Born in Roscoe, N.Y., on October 24, 1924, Patricia Joan Selleck was one of nine children of Josephine Gordon, a nurse who had immigrated from County Galway, Ireland, and Arthur W. Selleck, M.D., a country doctor with a private practice in Roscoe.
Following Dr. Selleck’s death in 1936, the family moved to the Bronx and then to New Rochelle. Patricia graduated from St. Simon Stock High School in the Bronx and went to work as a secretary at Pan American Airways in New York’s Chrysler Building.
After the Second World War, she met a returning Army Air Corps veteran and neighbor, Charles H. Burger. The couple wed on August 30, 1947, at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in New Rochelle, and were married for almost 50 years, before Mr. Burger’s death in 1997.
A daily communicant at Holy Family, she treasured her Catholic faith which informed her wisdom, selflessness and the loving kindness that she showed towards others. She was at her happiest spending time with her children wherever they were. She enjoyed corresponding with friends and family near and far, who would often get one of her signature hand-written notes.
She never drove a car, but in her active years was known to walk great lengths in New Rochelle and beyond. Her walking was not limited to city streets, however, and she enjoyed frequent trips to the Adirondack Mountains with her husband, where together they scaled several of the high peaks.
Mrs. Burger is survived by her children, Joan, of New Rochelle; Stephen (Sherri), of Warwick, NY; John (Mariangeles), of Hamden, CT; Mary (Will) Masson, of Shelburne, VT, and Elizabeth, of Larchmont, NY, as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by two sons, John William Burger, who died in infancy, and Deacon Charles H. Burger, by daughter-in-law, Barbara Burger, and grandson, Ivan Burger. Mrs. Burger’s own eight siblings – Arthur William Jr., Edward Gordon, George D., Guy (Mike) Franklin, James Arthur, Rev. John Paul, Mary Erin McKee, and William Martin — all predeceased her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Holy Family Church, 83 Clove Road, New Rochelle, NY on Tuesday, November 17 at 9:30 a.m., with a private burial to follow at Riverview Cemetery in Roscoe. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, friends may kindly consider a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
