Amalia Arles

Amalia Arles

Amalia Arles passed away on August 7, 2020 after a 9 month struggle with cancer. She was 86 years old. Amalia – or Molly as she was known to family and friends – lived most of her adult life (since 1959) as a resident of New Rochelle, a devout member of the Holy Family Parish and a good neighbor to those who knew her. She served on the Holy Family Women’s Auxiliary Guild, and cooked for the ‘Hope’ Soup Kitchen for many years well into her 80’s as her commitment to the service to others was a mainstay in all she did for those she knew and those who were in need. Her Catholic faith was at the center of her approach to the challenges and the celebrations that life brought to her and her family.
She will be remembered for her love of life, family, her heritage as a first generation Italian-American and her connection to her childhood roots in East Harlem, NYC in which she took great pride. The only child of Pasquale and Carmela Lancieri, founders of NYC’s Patsy’s Pizzeria (est.1933), her love of family, tradition and community traces back to her growing up on First Avenue in the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s. Her formative years were spent surrounded by Aunts, Uncles and cousins and extended family who shared the same love of all things ‘melfitane- assai, assai’ owing all they were to where came from – Melfi – a small town in southern Italy. The memories created by her childhood years shaped her and instilled in all who knew her, an appreciation of and nostalgia for the richness of the people and the times created by their little corner of New York City history.
Molly is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, New Rochelle’s former Commissioner of Human Services, James E. Arles. She is pre-deceased by her oldest child, Thomas Pasquale in 2009, but leaves her incredible legacy as a wife, mother, relative, friend and caring citizen in the hearts and minds of her 3 other children, Patricia, Debra and Stephen and their families which include 5 grandchildren whom she loved beyond words….August James, Sydney Olivia, Isabel Catherine, Kristin Amalia, and Donald. A funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Church, 83 Clove Road, New Rochelle on Wednesday August 12, 2020 at 10:30AM. Pre-cautions to protect ones health may not allow you attend and the family understands. The family requests, that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf (darles@sjsdny.org) or a charity of your choice.
