Joseph McKenna

Joe McKenna, a lifetime resident of New Rochelle, New York died July 16, 2020 after a sudden heart attack. He was 83. Joe was born in New Rochelle, a son of Virginia Marie Fanelli and William H. McKenna, former coach of New Rochelle High School. He attended Iona Prep where he graduated.
Joe enjoyed a long career in sports training that began as an assistant to Fritz Massman at Iona Prep and Iona College. In 1957 he enrolled in the Gus Mauch School (trainer for N.Y. Yankees) and Dusquenes University Training Course, for sports medicine. He became the New Rochelle Football trainer in 1958 and held that position for 40 years.
Joe was inducted into New Rochelle Hall of Fame in 2003. His Dad, Coach McKenna, was an inaugural inductee, and Joe as the first Sports Trainer inductee. He described successful training as “when a player is able to make his way back on the field after being injured. That’s what the profession is all about -Tending, Mending and Caring”
He had a passion for N.R. High School football and sponsored the Turkey Bowl trophies every year for the games two outstanding players.
Joe also volunteered for 8 years at the Hope Kitchen at San Gabriel’s Church in New Rochelle.
For outside hobbies he grew tomatoes with great expertise, and was written up by the Gardening Magazine “Burpee.” All his family and neighbors benefitted from his delicious crop.
Joe is survived by his sister, Patti McKenna Dollar of Kingwood, Texas and brother Ed McKenna of Palm Desert, California, along with many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his dear friend, Claire Lynch. He is predeceased by his brother, Bill McKenna and sister, Virginia McKenna Archer.
