Louise Marie Downs, age 89, passed peacefully on Good Friday, April 10, 2020. She was born May 5, 1930 in NYC but was a life-long resident of New Rochelle, NY. Louise spent her life cheering on and providing for her family, always putting other’s needs before her own. As the loving family matriarch, Louise was a loyal champion for her children and grandchildren. Those lucky enough to have known her, can attest to the fierce love and pride she held for family throughout her life. She was often heard saying that her grandchildren were indeed the most beautiful ones and the smartest ones, a phrase that brought us all so much laughter.
Louise’s caring nature framed her life experiences as well. For many years, she worked as a teacher’s assistant in a special education classroom at Albert Leonard Middle School. Her patience and love for her students was witnessed by everyone.
Louise is pre-deceased by her loving mother, Mary (Tedesco) Dorme, daughter Rosemary DeRenzo, and husband, John Downs. Both John and Louise enjoyed spending time with their loved ones, especially each summer in York Beach Maine, which was to become a beloved family tradition spanning four generations.
Louise is survived by her loving children; JoAnn Snow (Carl), Toni Migliore (Arthur), and John Downs Jr. (Randi), as well as by her beloved siblings; Grace Macri and Patrick Dorme Sr. Also, remembering her fondly, will be her grandchildren; Salvatore Preiato (Theresa), Christopher Snow, Danny Vitiello (Christine), Michelle Steinhauser (Adam), Frances Duff, Deanna Ambrosino (Ray), Brittany Campbell, Jared and Jake Okun, Braydon Downs and great-grandchildren; Danny Vitiello, Skylar Vitiello, Kayla Preiato, Kaia and AJ Steinhauser, along with many nieces, nephews and dear cousins.
Due to current circumstances, a funeral mass cannot be held. A memorial mass will be organized at a later date, to celebrate the life of Louise. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, a charity much beloved by Louise.
