Romeo A. Quaranta passed away on Monday, January 28, 2019, at the age of 93, in Wilmington NC.
Born in New Rochelle, NY, he was the son of the late Vergine and Anna Quaranta. He graduated from Albert Leonard High School in New Rochelle. Romeo was a US Navy veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations. After returning home from the Navy, Romeo met, dated and married Marie (nee) Colantuoni Quaranta of Brooklyn NY; they have been married for 69 years. Romeo had a career at CBS (NYC) spanning over 40 years. He started in radio and moved to television, until his retirement in 1991. He was a resident of New Rochelle for 90 years, and spent the last 3 years in Wilmington, NC.
He was a kind and loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, he was a true family man. He will be truly missed.
In addition to Romeo’s pride and love for his family and friends, he was also proud of the relationships he made at work. Some of his fondest were; Co-workers: Tony Filippi, George Spilich, Frank Chicinian, and Celebrities: Frank Gifford, Pat Summerall, Jim Nantz, Mary Carillo, Tony Trabert, Sammy Davis Jr. and Chi-Chi Rodriguez.
Some of Romeo’s favorite work assignments included: The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, The Republican & Democratic National Conventions of 1968, Apollo Moon Missions coverage from Grumman Aircraft HQ., thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown, multiple NFL Football Games and Golf Tournaments including, his favorite, “The Masters” as well as many US Open Tennis Tournaments. All were nationally televised broadcasts.
Romeo is pre-deceased by his father Vergine Antonio Quaranta, his mother Anna Rapolla Quaranta; his brother, Frank and wife Rose: his sister Vincenza (Vi) and husband George Grove.
He is survived by his wife Marie, five children: Arthur (Eileen), Wilmington, NC; Robert (Susan), Wilton, CT; Ann Marie (Don), Stamford CT; Diane (Bill), Bethlehem, PA; Nancy (Stephen), Rye, NY. Fifteen grandchildren: Marissa (Rachel); Luke, Daniel (Heather), Kate (Rubin), Tommy, Matt (Salay), Joe, Nick (Marie), Alison (Dave), Nicole (Wyat), Billy (Michelle), Bridgette, Kelly, Sean, Kaitlyn. Thirteen great-grandchildren: Simone, Ceil, Talia, Naomi, Benicio, Marija, Leo, Luke, Elaina, Michela, Charlotte, Nico, Connor, and five nieces, Barbara, Janet, Patty, Ginny, Roseann, & their families.
A wake will be held at Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Funeral Home, 16 Shea Place New Rochelle, on Friday February 1st. Hours of visitation will be 3-5 pm and 7-9pm. The Funeral Mass is at 9:30am on Saturday February 2nd at Holy Family Church, 83 Clove Road, New Rochelle. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 95 Kings Hwy, New Rochelle.
