Born in Paris in 1936, Mr. Coppola immigrated to the US in 1949, and lived in Mt. Vernon, NY throughout his youth. After attending local schools and Westchester Community College, Mr. Coppola served for 2 years in the US Army in Korea. He married Camille Claps in 1960, and settled in New Rochelle, NY. Benefiting from the GI Bill, he received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Brooklyn Poly Tech. Employed by the New York City Public Works department for 29 years, he later completed his Masters Degree in Politics and Public Policy from Fordham University, while maintaining a parallel career as a licensed professional engineer and home inspector.
He continued to work after his official retirement from NYCPWD: First as a part time instructor at Brooklyn Poly Tech, and then as a consulting engineer with Carnell Engineering.
Mr. Coppola’s main hobby was his involvement with Community Theater with companies throughout Westchester County and Connecticut as an actor, director, set designer, and most notably, an original founding member of New Rochelle Civic Theatre in 1967 until the Company folded in 2008. It was through his passion of theater that he gained a lifetime of loving friends, and received the 2008 Cab Calloway Lifetime Achievement Award for Continued Outstanding Contributions to Westchester Theater. He will be greatly missed..
