Raquel was born in Guantanamo, Oriente, Cuba on February 22, 1928, to the late Dr. Isidoro Castellanos and America Pintado Castellanos. Raquel was preceded in death by her husband, Mario Gonzalo Suarez, whom she married on April 16, 1949 in Havana, Cuba, and to whom she was completely devoted for their almost sixty-five years of marriage.
Raquel is survived by her three sisters, Olga C. Torres (Spouse: Pablo, deceased), America Santamarina (Victor) and Marta Squire (W. Geoffrey), also, her sister-in-law, Miriam C. Suarez, and many nieces and nephews, whom she cared for dearly. Her eight beloved children are: Raquel Martinez-Fonts (Alfonso), Mario Suarez (Teresa), Jorge Suarez (Janet), Julio Suarez (Jean), Javier Suarez (Susan), Juan Suarez (Jennifer), Maria Cox (Robert), and Guillermo Suarez (Susan). Raquel was also blessed to be the Grandmama to thirty-four grandchildren and the GreatGrandmama to forty-three.
Raquel attended St. George’s School in el Vedado, Havana and then continued her studies at the University of Havana‚Äôs School of Filosofia and Letras. Mario and Raquel left their native Cuba when Castro took control, bringing their young family to the United States. They eventually settled into the neighborhood of Sutton Manor in New Rochelle, where they developed life-long friendships among their neighbors. Raquel, a devout Catholic, was a parishioner of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church since 1962.
The elegant and proud matriarch of the Suarez family, Raquel loved life. A woman of grace and beauty, she had a stunning smile and an engaging laugh. Raquel devoted her life to her family, providing not only a wonderful, warm home atmosphere and famously delicious food, but also a shared perspective on the vitality and joy of living. Known for her positive outlook, as well as her ability to make everyone she met feel uniquely special, she spread happiness, relished company, and experienced many deep friendships.
Raquel enjoyed traveling with her husband to places throughout Europe, Japan, Mexico, Canada and the United States. She loved the fine arts, especially musical theatre and cinema, and was often heard singing tunes from her favorite shows. A voracious reader, with a particular penchant for biographies, she filled her home with books. In keeping with her appreciation for things beautiful, Raquel was a member of the New Rochelle Garden Club for over forty years. She also enjoyed cooking and learning about various international cuisines and traditions, which was ever-appreciated by her guests at the many feasts she provided in her home for family and friends.
Raquel Suarez was an exceptional woman, loved by so many, who will be dearly missed. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her
