Catherine A. Cullen (Kae), 97, passed away on January 12, 2016. She was born on July 22, 1918 to Anna (Hussey) and Patrick Hennessy in New Rochelle. Kae married John Lincoln Cullen (Link) only days before the bombs fell on Pearl Harbor. Link, who had already served 3 years in the US Navy, had to return to the service of his country for an additional 5 years. They were married for 67 years.
Kae was a devout Catholic and for many years attended daily mass at Blessed Sacrament Church where she was a communicant for more than 63 years. She was a member of the Blessed Mother’s Sodality, the Couple’s Club and the Mothers’ Club and during the early years she was a volunteer transportation director for the Ursuline nuns at St. Jerome’s parish in the Bronx. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, Echo Bay Yacht Club, and the New Rochelle Women’s Club. Kae retired from New York Telephone Company/ATT after many years of dedicated service. In the last 3 years she was weakened and stayed at home where she was wonderfully cared for by Laurece Johnson and Stela Marsan.
Caring and with a generous spirit Kae led her life in the service of others. Kae looked out for her sisters & brothers, nephews & nieces, children & grandchildren. She found great joy in helping people. She could never do enough. She loved people and she was truly loved by family & friends. Family was always top priority for Kae. She encouraged her children to value education, supported and encouraged them in their endeavors and took great pride in their successes. In her youth Kae was a great swimmer and athlete, a jumper & runner. She had boundless energy and walked everywhere during her retirement years.
Kae is survived by 4 children: John (Alison), Brian, Patricia Cullen Confalone (Gerard), Kathleen Cullen Kortleven (James), 9 grandchildren: Caycee, Dylan, JonPatrick, and Matthew Cullen, Myrcee Gottschall, Bradley and Tyler Confalone, Ethan Heilman and James Kortleven, and 8 great-grandchildren: Bella, Myla, & Jameson Gottschall, Mason & Morgan Cullen, Lincoln, Maggie, and Hunter Confalone. She is also survived by three sisters: Anne Latino, Maria Martin and Patricia Dillon. She was predeceased by her loving husband, John (Link) Cullen and her siblings Dorothy Belfiore, James and Frank Hennessy and her half-brothers Jack, Tom, Henry and Joe Hennessy.
Visitation on Wednesday 4-8pm at Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel, Inc., 16 Shea Pl., New Rochelle. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday 10:30am at Blessed Sacrament Church.
