Marie Grace Barnett
November 13, 1931 — December 9, 2015
Marie was born to Rachel and Joseph Carello (both deceased) in New Rochelle, NY. She married Dick Barnett (deceased) at Blessed Sacrament Church in 1955, having met him while both worked at the Fort Slocum Chaplain School, and together they raised their children Chuck, Jamie, and Rachelle on North Avenue in New Rochelle.
A female entrepreneur when they were rare, she opened and ran a chain of photocopy stores up the East Coast in the 1970s with her brothers John (deceased) and Daniel Carello. Later, she was active in local politics and real estate.
Marie had a love of brainteasers of many kinds, from word games to jigsaw puzzles, and was a magician with a bingo dauber. She had a sharp wit and was a keen-eyed editor. She had a zero-tolerance policy on onions and a great enjoyment of the ocean, especially in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where the family often vacationed. Regardless of location, she was relentlessly helpful to those around her, rarely taking time for herself.
She is survived by her brother Daniel, three children, and eight grandchildren, all of whom will also miss her chicken cutlets and laughter, which were both magnificent.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you buy yourself a nice gardenia plant.
