Charles T. Collins

Charles T. Collins

Charles T. Collins, a lifelong resident of New Rochelle, died on November 8, 2015. He was 83. Charles, known as “Rip” or “Charlie” to his friends was born on November 21, 1931 in New Rochelle to the late Charles A. and Margaret (O’Reilly) Collins. Charlie spent nearly his entire life on the water in and around New Rochelle; from his days as a 15 year-old launch operator for the Echo Bay Yacht Club, through his long career in marine construction piloting tugs, barges and dredges along the East Coast. He was the co-owner of Island Marine Contracting Corp for close to 20 years in New Rochelle and was later employed by Gates Construction and Norwalk Cove Marina. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by his five children Michael (Donna) Collins, Dan (Kimberly) Collins, Karen (Frank) Flanagan, Charles (Ana) Collins and Bill (Lisa) Collins; his fifteen grandchildren and his brother Frank (Terry) Collins. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, the former Joan Smith, who passed away on February 2, 2014, and his sister Mary Searing.
Rip was known as the captain and host of countless nautical excursions on his boat, the “Born Free”. He owned the boat for 40 years and all family and friends were always welcome to spend a day on the water. Rip will be missed terribly, but he will live on in our cherished memories.
Visiting hours are Friday from 4-8pm at Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel Inc. 16 Shea Pl. New Rochelle. A funeral mass is scheduled for 10:30am at Blessed Sacrament Church on Saturday November 14. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Charles’ name to the Hugh A. Doyle Senior Center, 94 Davis Ave, New Rochelle NY 10805.
