John T. Lang

John T. Lang, Retired Deputy Fire Chief of the Mt. Vernon Fire Dept., died May 17th 2015 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, N.Y. Born August 5th 1918 in Mt. Vernon to John and Annie (Kirrane) Lang. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Jeanne McCarthy Lang whom he married June 24th 1950 at Blessed Sacrament Church in New Rochelle, NY. Beloved father of five wonderful sons- Michael-Deputy Chief (Ret.) FDMV (Lorraine) of Yonkers, NY, John T. Jr. (Miroslawa) of New Rochelle, NY, Robert K. (Ana Maria) of Pelham, NY, Christopher J. (Leslie) of Milford, CT and James J.- Fire Capt.-FDMV (Wendy) of Yorktown Heights, NY. Eleven grandchildren- Michael, Kevin, Christopher, Andrew, Cristina, Catherine , Monica, Douglas , Kyle, Jordan and Addison. Great grandchildren- Alexa, Dean, Mikayla and Stella. Nephew Ronald (Joe) Heiser of Ft. Lee, NJ. Predeceased by his two sisters- Ann M. Heiser of Mt. Vernon, NY and Mary J. Barstow of Glenn Falls, NY.
John was appointed to the Mt. Vernon Fire Dept. in 1948 and promoted through the ranks to Deputy Chief in 1977, and retired in 1980. He served in the United States Navy from May of 1943 to Dec. 1945. While enlisted, he graduated from Naval Firefighting School and was assigned to Air/Sea Rescue at Buefort Naval Air Station, NC. He attended Mt. Vernon schools, Edison Tech High School in 1938. Graduated from the Delechanty Institute of Firefighting training (Mt. Vernon Adult ED) and Municipal Fire Administration and Technique of Firefighting- Prevention and Control. CPR Course-Miseracordia Hospital. John was a member of UFFA Local-107-FDMV Uniformed Fire Officers Association, Westchester Prof. Firefighters Conference, Knights of Columbus Council #339, BPOE Lodge #756, Charter member of the Westchester Co. Firefighters Emerald Society, Member of both Echo BayYacht Club and the Davenport Club of New Rochelle, NY, and parishioner of Holy Family Church, New Rochelle, NY.
John was the recipient of the National Am. Red Cross Citation in 1975 being directly responsible for the rescue and Successful revival of a 12 yr. old male with CPR-victim of a structure fire. This award issued by the Red Cross was the first ever in Westchester Co.
Visiting will be Tuesday 2-4 & 7-9pm at Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel, Inc., 16 Shea Place, New Rochelle. Mass will be Wednesday 10:30am at Holy Family Church. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donation may be made to charity of choice.
