Rose S. Leon

Rose S. Leon a lifelong resident of New Rochelle died on May 5, 2014. She was 92.
Rose was born on August 28, 1921 in New Rochelle to the late Vincent and Antoinette (Soriero) Scoca. She graduated from The College of New Rochelle in 1943, and many years later she received her MS in Social Work from Smith College and her MBA from Pace University. She worked for 42 years as a Social Worker for Westchester County. Throughout her career she volunteered her time to many community causes and activities and after retirement she worked as a hospice volunteer at the Jansen Memorial Hospice and the United Hospital Hospice. Rose was extremely active and a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church of New Rochelle where she was ordained a Deacon in 1955, and later became a church elder. After 50 years as a church officer she became a ruling elder. She was an active member of the Inter-Religious Council and received a community service award in 1996.
Rose was a passionate swimmer and a long time member of the New Rochelle Polar Bear Club along with her sisters Micky and Vinnie. She had her lifeguard certification and in 1999 she saved the life of an eight year old girl that was drowning at Hudson Park. The New Rochelle Police department recognized this act and awarded her Citizen of the Year.
Rose was also very active in The College of New Rochelle and at her 60th year reunion was awarded the Angela Merici Medal for outstanding loyalty to the church, to The College of New Rochelle, and for making distinctive contributions throughout her career.
Rose was predeceased by her husband Martin D .Leon and is survived by her son David Leon, her daughter Antonette L. Mora and her son-in-law Adriano Mora, her sisters Nettie Pizza and Michelina (Micky) Wright, her brother Eddie Scoca, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her beautiful smile will be missed by all that knew and loved her.
Visiting hours will be Sunday 2-4 & 7-9 PM at Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel, Inc., 16 Shea Pl., New Rochelle, where a funeral service is scheduled for Monday 10 AM. Interment will follow at Beechwoods Cemetery.
