Hedwig Vetack, a longtime resident of New Rochelle, died on September 15, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was 97.
Hedwig was born on February 26, 1916 in Plains, Pennsylvania to the late Felix and Branislau (Opiatowski) Prawdzik. She worked for many years as a lunch monitor for the City of New York Public School District.
She married her beloved husband Michael in 1936, who predeceased her in 1989.
She is survived by her five children Michael (the late Mary Ellen), Dorothy Mergel, Joseph (Elsie), Barbara (Tito) Rodriguez, and Mary Ann (Robert) Wenzler, twenty four grandchildren, twenty seven great grandchildren, her daughter-in-law Catherine Vetack, her former son-in-law James Mergel, her sisters Bertha Prawdzik and Sophie Spiegel, her sister-in-laws Verna Prawdzik and Pauline Vitek, and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son Robert, her brothers Chester and Joseph Prawdzik, and her sister Genevieve Gobbo.
Visiting will be Monday 7-9pm and Tuesday 4-8pm at Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel, 16 Shea Pl, New Rochelle. Mass Wednesday 10:30am at Blessed Sacrament Church. Interment will follow at St. Raymond’s Cemetery.
