A college teacher for 36 years, Sister Jane Clary, formerly known as Madeleine, died on Sunday, July 15, 2013, at Andrus on Hudson. She was 101 years old.
Sister Jane was an avid reader and a joyful presence in her years as a member of the community of St. Teresa in New Rochelle. She graduated from the College of New Rochelle in 1933 with a major in history. She entered the Ursulines in 1933 at Beacon, NY and made her final vows in 1940. In 1944 she earned a Master’s degree in English at the Catholic University of America.
She taught at the elementary level at The Ursuline School (1936-1937), followed by 4 years at Blessed Sacrament School in New Rochelle. In 1941 she joined the faculty at the College of New Rochelle. With her irrepressible spirit and her love of books, she taught generations of young women in the English department until 1977.
She became a proof reader at Isidore, Lefkowitz, Elgort from 1977 to 1980; a proof reader and copy editor for 4 years at Al Paul Lefton, and a librarian at Right Associates from 1984 to 1986. In her retirement from 1986, she did volunteer work, and in 2006 she moved to Andrus.
Sr. Jane was born in Seneca Falls, NY, to Ellen and Thomas Clary on January 28, 1912. She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers and four sisters. Wake will be at the Ursuline Provincialate, 1338 North Avenue, New Rochelle, on Thursday, July 18, 2013 from 2 to 5 P.M. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the chapel of the Ursuline Provincialate on Thursday, July 18, at 5 P.M. Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in New Rochelle. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to the Ursuline Retirement Fund at the Ursuline Provincialate, 1338 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY 10804.
