Patricia Maria Sutton, 84, passed away
of natural causes on Dec. 26, 2011, at the Westchester ARC Group Home in Scarsdale, NY. Patty, who was mentally retarded,
was a sweet woman who loved to laugh. Born July 6, 1927, Patty’s favorite things were pink beads, pink ribbons, Pepsi,
and spaghetti and meatballs. Her younger brother, Richard Sutton, recalls that as a young
girl Patty helped her mother collect eggs; she was the bravest of the siblings, not worried about the chickens pecking her
feet. Patty would simply push the chickens out of the way and fill up the egg basket. When she turned fifteen, Patty went to live in a state institution in Wassaic, NY,
until the Willowbrook decree in the mid-seventies. Her older brother, Anthony F. Sutton, recalls driving to Wassaic many weekends
with their parents and nieces and nephews in tow to share picnic lunches with her. Patty loved spending the days outdoors
on the lawn being treated to her favorite Italian foods prepared by her mother. After that she moved to the group home
in Scarsdale, where Patty learned to become more verbal. The staff members of the home were her voice
and were absolutely devoted to Patty. The family threw a big bash for Patty’s 80th birthday for which she requested
“strawberry shortcake, vanilla ice cream, and Pepsi, her favorite beverage.” Patty
was predeceased by her parents, Anthony T. and Catherine Sutton, her older brother, William Sutton, and her younger brother,
John (Rex) Sutton. Patty is survived by brothers, Anthony F. Sutton and Richard Sutton both of New Rochelle, Dexter Sutton
and his wife, Anne-Marie, of New Canaan, CT, and a sister, Geraldine Barrese, and her husband, Joseph, of Westerly, RI, and
numerous nieces and nephews
